Predicting The Success Of The Next 10 Major Comic Book Movies
9. Hellboy (January 11, 2019)
Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 63% Predicted Box Office: $145m
To the dismay of many (most notably himself), Guillermo Del Toro never got the chance to wrap up his planned Hellboy trilogy, but now over a decade later the 'Right Hand of Doom' will make his return to theaters in Neil Marshall's R-rated reboot.
While Hellboy marks Marshall's first theatrical release in almost nine years, the director has worked extensively on television in the interim and has delivered critically-acclaimed episodes of stylish, atmospheric genre shows such as Game of Thrones, Hannibal and Westworld, with his sensibilities seemingly a great match for the material.
However, an early January release date isn't usually a massive vote of confidence from the studio for effects-heavy fare, and with M. Night Shyamalan's hugely-anticipated Glass coming just one week later with the exact same demographic in mind Hellboy could find it tough to gain much traction at the box office, especially if the reviews are less than favorable.
Del Toro's Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army may have scored well with critics, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 81% and 86% respectively, but they weren't exactly smash hits at the box office. The first one failed to even crack $100m globally and while the sequel fared much better, $160.4m is hardly blockbuster numbers.
With a smaller budget and lower expectations to boot, a final total somewhere in the middle would be a minor success for the upcoming reboot, but may not be enough to secure the sequels that the studio no doubt already has in mind.
