Predicting The Success Of The Next 10 Major Comic Book Movies
5. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5, 2019)
Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84% Predicted Box Office: $900m
Finally free from the evil clutches of Sony, Spider-Man is well and truly established as a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Jon Watts looking to make Far From Home the character's first good sequel since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 way back in 2004.
Integrating Spidey into the fabric of the MCU paid off a treat, as Homecoming over-delivered both critically and commercially, and in fact earned the best reviews and biggest box office for a Spider-Man movie since Raimi was at the helm a decade previously.
To date, every single sequel in the history of the MCU has earned more money at the box office than its predecessor with the exception of Avengers: Age of Ultron, with the jury still out on Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is only midway through its theatrical run.
In terms of second installments, Marvel Studios have been much more hit-and-miss from a critical standpoint. Iron Man 2, Thor: The Dark World, Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 all fared worse critically than the opening movie. If Far From Home were to buck the trend, it would join only Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the previously-mentioned Ant-Man and the Wasp as the only direct follow-ups to score more enthusiastic critical responses than the original.
Spider-Man: Homecoming earned a not-inconsiderable $880.1m at the box office and currently sits at an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, which puts huge pressure on the sequel to match, if not exceed, Spidey's memorable standalone introduction to the MCU.
