Pride And Prejudice: Ranking The Adaptations Worst To Best

4. Bride And Prejudice (2004)

MCDBRAN EC062 A Bollywood-style adaptation of P&P that's energetic and engaging. Who would have thought that swapping the Bennet family in 1790s England to a middle-class home in modern Amritsar, India would go so smoothly? In this version, Mrs Bakshi, an Indian version of our beloved Mrs. Bennet, is eager to find husbands for her four unmarried daughters. When the rich single Balraj and his friend Darcy come to visit, the Bakshis are enthusiastic at the idea of romance. This was the first English-speaking feature for the beautiful Aishwarya Rai, who plays this version's Lizzie. The movie's tone shifts between parody and serious, as if it's not sure which it prefers. Martin Henderson, who plays Darcy, comes off as a cardboard cutout of a slice of white bread, which is unfortunate, considering the cast around him is more engaging and interesting than he is. His boring good looks and funny haircut help his lifeless performance stand out amidst a gorgeous movie. Also, this version's Bingley is played by Naveen Andrews - who is a giant babe - and when you've got Naveen Andrews not only being a babe on screen, but dancing on screen? Put a fork in me, I'm absolutely done. Bollywood style films aren't for everyone, but I would still recommend checking out this adaptation if you're interested in a light hearted, musical take on Pride And Prejudice.
