Prometheus 2: 10 Questions The Film Needs To Answer

2. What Is Up With David?

The most startling standout performance of Prometheus came to Michael Fassbender's morally ambiguous android David, who helped decimate the crew under the orders of Weyland, the aged philanthropist who is funding the space mission. However, David showed more than a slight cunning streak, engineering the death of Holloway by deliberately stealing a sample of the black goo and spiking it into a drink of his, effectively endangering the lives of the entire crew. David is the most enigmatic member of the crew, Fassbender infusing humanity and a calm menace into his role that sees him ape Peter O'Toole and feel belittled by his superiors, the human crew, but the exact nature of his evolving intelligence and arrogance is never addressed within the context of the film. Is David acting solely on Peter Weyland's orders, or is it something more? David's nature needs exploring throughout Prometheus 2, given that he is all but the male lead opposite Shaw, and the true nature of the android deserves to be addressed - is he similar to Ash in the original Alien movie, or is he a more sophisticated model, one who harbours these grudges with a winning smile and later offers you a literal poisoned chalice in a way that fulfils the goals of his master as well as settling a petty score? Shaw had best watch her back.
