20: Prometheus?
Prometheus in Greek mythology was the Titan that was given the job by Zeus to create Man. He gave mankind a number of gifts including fire. Prometheus also tricked Zeus into giving Man the best parts of animals that were sacrificed for the gods. This annoyed Zeus who sentenced Prometheus to be chained to a rock and have his liver eaten by an eagle. Apart from the tenuous link about creating man, what else does anything in the film have to do with Prometheus? Not much, it's just an illusion to make you think that the film has depth. It's a film that would love to be thought of as raising questions about where we come from and how wondrous the universe is, but in fact it fails miserably. Just like Lost, Lindelof raises lots of interesting ideas initially and then takes them nowhere. He does this because all he can do is create a fake aura of mystery with nothing behind it to give you a satisfying conclusion. He thinks that by throwing lots of unanswered questions into a script, it will be enough for people to think the film has depth because they will endlessly debate them on the internet. That does not make a film deep or interesting, it makes it annoying. Films like 2001, Blade Runner and Star Trek" The Motion Picture done it right, Prometheus would love to be seen in the same group as those films but it's let down by a week script that has no thought behind it. The only thing you question when you leave the cinema is the script meetings where non of these issues were ironed out.
