Quentin Tarantino: Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Pulp Fiction

9. Fox Force Five

When Mia's relates her Fox Force Five story to Vincent, she establishes the backstory for her character, explaining she became a master of blades thanks to growing up with circus performers, no doubt a reference to Rollo The Knifethrower from Mad Love, who has an identical back story. Fox Force Five itself is a reference to Foxforce (otherwise known as Ebony, Ivory & Jade, or She Devils in Chains, or American Beauty Hostages), a similarly ethnically diverse squad of females with unique and diverse skills.

8. Douglas Sirk And Durward Kirby

Whilst on his date with Mia at Jack Rabbit Slim's, Vincent orders a "Douglas Sirk steak." Douglas Sirk was a movie director popular in the 50s and made movies such as Magnificent Obsession and Written In The Wind. Mia, on the other hand, orders a "Durward Kirby burger." Durward Kirby was famous the host of Candid Camera in the 50s, and for appearing on The Garry Moore Show.

7. Mia's Dance Moves Are Cool For Cats

Uma Thurman based her dance moves for the Jack Rabbit Slim's twist dance contest on those of Duchess from Walt Disney's The Aristocats.
