Quentin Tarantino: Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Jackie Brown

17. The Graduate

The opening sequence, in which Jackie Brown moves along an airport conveyor belt, is an obvious homage to The Graduate, whose opening sequence is almost identical. Instead of the downbeat and melancholic nature of that scene, though, Tarantino infuses the scene with an upbeat track and brighter colours.

17. Pam Grier

Though the film was adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch, Tarantino chose the title partly as an homage to star Pam Grier, who famously played Blaxploitation legend Foxy Brown. Jackie Brown was written as a homage to Grier's career as one of the most culturally important and successful Blaxploitation actors of all-time, and the titular hero was written especially for her. The appearance of the title is also a tribute to Foxy Brown, whose posters used the same font.
