R-Rated DC Comic Book Movies Are Inevitable

How about a horror Batman to start?

In the wake of Deadpool and Logan's successes, you'd have thought that more studios would be spiriting R-rated comic book movies into production. Already, there's been talk of Hellboy's grown-up reboot with a darker, more horror-inspired edge and there's obviously a Deadpool sequel well on its way too, but beyond that, the R-rated deluge simply hasn't come.

It might still for DC though.

According to Variety's profile of Warner Bros' new Chief Content Officer, Toby Emmerich, there's a very good chance we'll be seeing them wade into R-rated waters in the future. He confirmed he "would be surprised if we didn’t at some point make an R-rated DC movie" and confessed that he "admired the violent, irreverent and adult comic-book" of both Deadpool and Logan.

Putting aside how well-suited lots of important comic book arcs are for a R-rated approach, there's also the added bonus of grittier, more personal stories that work well with that rating generally cost less to make. Unless you're looking at a more supernatural movie requiring lots of effects, anyway.

Right now, DC and Warner Bros have multiple opportunities to go R-rated. The Batman would be great with less restraint - particularly if they went with a more traditional horror approach - and the Suicide Squad sequel is tailor-made. Then there's Harley Quinn's Birds Of Prey, possible Suicide Squad spin-offs and Justice League Dark to consider.

And of course, if there's any time for Lobo to make his R-rated cinematic debut, it's now.
