Ralph Fiennes: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Hades - Clash Of The Titans (2010) & Wrath Of The Titans (2012)

Hi, is this Hades? Yeah, Lord Voldemort called. He wants his Ralph Fiennes back. Standing as the antithesis to the fantastically over-the-top villain who made it into the 5 awesome performances list is this comical farce of a mythical God from the two Titan movies. Fiennes looks great in the part and his mere presence is enough to elevate the hollow popcorn flick with some gravitas, but it's a wobbly elevation at best and at worst, it's downright painful to watch. While it must have been fun to play such a mighty villain that's all appearance and very little substance, and with Liam Neeson portraying Zeus the Schindler's List reunion was perhaps added incentive, Fiennes still gives theatricality a bad name here. Campy and comical in moments when it's not intended to be, Hades struts around sounding like an 80 year old man who's on three packs a day and not the God of the underworld in Clash Of The Titans. In the abysmal sequel he gets more one-on-ones with Liam Neeson's Zeus so you'd think there would be room for awesomeness but, it's clear that we're not watching Oskar Schindler and Amon Goeth here. Making gods into caricatures should be treasonous enough but when you're made to say lines like "I'm a god! I will live forever!" it's time to start getting worried. Listen to your inner Voldemort Mr. Fiennes, and don't waste your talents on hogwash like this.
