Ranking: 10 Highest Grossing Movies Of Summer 2017

1. War For The Planet Of The Apes

Box Office: $346.8 million (#10)

How ironic it is that the best film of the summer is also the lowest-grossing of these ten movies. Though hardly a bomb, the trilogy-capping Apes movie hasn't even grossed half of the previous movie's $710.6 million worldwide total, likely due to its far darker, more downcast tone.

Still, nobody can take away what an utterly masterful film this is in every regard, from Matt Reeves' superb direction, to Michael Giacchino's musical score and, most of all, the astonishing performances, especially from Andy Serkis as Caesar and Woody Harrelson as the villainous Colonel.

With grand emotional heft and some of the sharpest characterisation in any blockbuster in recent memory, War for the Planet of the Apes is pretty much as artful and ambitious as modern tentpoles get.
