Ranking: 20 Highest Grossing Horror Movies Of All Time

10. The Ring

The Ring Naomi Watts
Universal Pictures

Box Office: $249.3 million (#18)

A rare horror remake that honours the original while giving it a worthy, glossy Hollywood update, Gore Verbinski's take on Hideo Nakata's 1998 J-horror classic steeps itself in tension and suspense rather than the expected blood-letting, and is bolstered by a sharp central performance from Naomi Watts.

Intensely atmospheric and enhanced by Bojan Bazelli's gorgeous cinematography, the film's enormous success may have led to a glut of inferior J-horror remakes such as The Grudge (not to mention two terrible Hollywood Ring follow-ups), but on its own terms, this is proof that not all Hollywood cash-ins on foreign hits are created equal.
