Ranking: 20 Highest Grossing Horror Movies Of All Time

1. The Exorcist

The Exorcist
Warner Bros.

Box Office: $441.3 million (#4)

Though it may play as too quiet and subdued for younger audiences nowadays, William Friedkin's bracingly intense supernatural horror film is probably the most iconic horror film ever made, and surely the best.

From Friedkin's fearless direction to the masterful performances across the board (especially Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow and Jason Miller), the terrific use of Mike Oldfield's iconic Tubular Bells and essentially every aspect of its production, this is basically a perfect horror film beyond compare.

Packed to the gills with scenes that will impress themselves upon your brain forever more, The Exorcist is an initially quietly anxious film which builds to a more volcanic explosion of terror later on, and Friedkin clearly has a blast toying with his audience throughout.
