Ranking 2015's Summer Blockbuster Films From Worst To Best
13. Pitch Perfect 2
Pitch Perfect 2 may not quite reach the hilarious, fiercely original highs of the first movie, but it's nevertheless a solid sequel that sticks close to what worked the first time, while diversifying the musical selection as well as the cast. Working hugely in the film's favour is the introduction of the outrageously efficient German a capella outfit Das Sound Machine, whose rendition of Muse's "Uprising" early in the movie is easily the best thing in either of the films. Otherwise PP2 essentially repeats a lot of the gags from last time, and the scenes that cement the Bellas' sisterhood bond are more cheesy than endearing. Rebel Wilson once again steals every scene she's in as Fat Amy, while the addition of the lovely Hailee Steinfeld as a new Bella is very much welcome, and though the film stumbles a little at the climax (the Bellas' victory is unconvincing and, as a result, totally hollow), it delivers pretty much everything fans expect. However, there's no excusing that 115-minute runtime: a concise, snappy 90 would've done just fine. With its box office more-than-doubling that of the original, though, expect a third movie soon enough...
