Ranking All 22 Major Summer 2016 Blockbusters From Worst To Best
1. Captain America: Civil War
Given what happened with Batman v Superman (I know, I know, it's not a binary competition), Captain America: Civil War could have been an absolute bust. The film had a lot of things that could potentially have tripped it up - the budget, the balance required, the expectations - but instead of crumpling under the billing as Avengers 2.5, it soared.
In the Russos, Marvel have unveiled one of the most impressive directing teams in comic book movies: they brought in an incredible number of moving parts, including a resolution to the Bucky story, elements of the comic book event with the same name and the debuts of Black Panther and Spider-Man. It also expanded the Avengers team with Ant-Man called up, added a villain in Daniel Bruhl's slow-burning Zemo and set the course for the rest of Phase 3. And it did so without dropping any noticeable balls.
Sure, some characters were a little sidelined, but it was appropriate and not at all distracting, and the set-pieces (in particular the stunning airport sequence) were some of the best in the MCU to date. It was everything a comic book movie should be.
