RottenTomatoes Score: 51% (5.5/10)

Box Office: With a mammoth $209 million price tag, Valerian is the most expensive European and independent movie ever made, and to the surprise of no-one other than director Luc Besson, it's only barely made half its budget back so far.

In short, a colossal bomb that's unlikely to be topped by anything else this year.

Verdict: Though Dane DeHaan is totally miscast here and the plot only makes a certain amount of sense, Valerian is a visually jaw-dropping and surprisingly charming sci-fi romp that's absolutely like nothing else out there right now.

Whoever bankrolled this movie for so much money wasn't very smart, but it's nevertheless fantastic that something so demented exists at such a massive price point. It may have bombed, but it's got cult classic potential written all over it in the years to come.
