While the television series Batman Beyond was exceptional in its own right, its feature film, Return of the Joker, was truly something special. This is a fantastic film that gives us a brand-new take on the omnipresent conflict between Batman and the Joker with incredible results.

In this movie, we see the new Batman, Terry McGinnis, a man to whom the Joker was a mere story, have to take on the Clown Prince of Crime for the very first time.

The dynamic between Terry, his newfound nemesis, as well as his mentor; an older, battle-scarred Bruce Wayne (whom Kevin Conroy captures perfectly), is played to absolute perfection. Plus, the story of how the Joker was resurrected shows him at some of his sadistic best, which is only amplified by Mark Hamill giving what is arguably his single best performance as the character.

It is an absolutely stellar film with an urgent, genuinely haunting plot and a satisfying climax that represents just how powerful character-driven storytelling can be, in addition to once again finding that perfect balance that makes it equally enjoyable for kids and adults alike.
