Ranking Every Hannibal Adaptation Worst To Best

5. Hannibal (2001)

Hannibal is the third film in the series and was adapted from the 1999 novel of the same name. It is a direct sequel to The Silence of the Lambs and features the return of Sir Anthony Hopkins as the titular character, though the role of Clarice Starling was not played by Jodie Foster, but was instead taken up by Julianne Moore.

The film is set ten years after the events of The Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal Lecter has been on the run for a decade following the events of the first film and Agent Starling continues in her efforts to return him to justice.

Only one man has survived Lecter's violence and he is determined to capture his former assailant, which puts his efforts directly in the way of Starlings and the various law enforcement agencies hunting Lecter across the globe.

Financially, Hannibal did rather well pulling in $351.6 million on an $87 million budget. The film didn't fare as well with critics who had a mixed reaction to the "gory or grotesque incidents."

Of the three films starring Hopkins in the role of Hannibal Lecter, this is the weakest, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good film. Ray Liotta was especially delectable in his role and if you watch this for anything, see it for the dinner scene... it's delightfully horrific.
