Ranking EVERY James Bond Henchman From Worst To Best

18. Renard (The World Is Not Enough, 1999)

Hear us out; although billed as the main baddie, Renard is in fact working at the behest of the villainous Elektra King.

He's thought to be the main target for most of 1999's The World Is Not Enough, hyped up as a threat like none ever faced before. Impervious to pain due to an embedded bullet in his skull killing off his senses (if they say so), Renard is said to be able to "push himself harder, longer than any normal man."

Sadly, it's an ability he doesn't do much with - short of holding a scalding lump of rock without flinching.

Other than that, Renard plays a pivotal role in the film's plot - and the reveal that he's working to make Elektra one of the world's richest oil suppliers was, at the time, quite the twist. As a clever development, its "The villain is a henchman" gimmick was mimicked by, among others, The Dark Knight Rises.

Renard's not quite as memorable as Bane, but he's a figure that does well at getting under Bond's skin - provoking outbursts of almost uncharacteristic violence from Pierce Brosnan's 007.

As Bond teaches him, of course, Renard may be immune to pain - but not to death.

Chest thumping James Bond and Haruki Murakami fanatic living in China. Once had a fever dream about riding a rowboat with Davos Seaworth. He hasn't updated this section since Game of Thrones was cool, and boy does it show.
