Ranking EVERY James Bond Henchman From Worst To Best
1. Donald "Red" Grant (From Russia With Love, 1963)
Who else could it have been but James Bond's dark mirror?
This deranged hitman is handpicked by SPECTRE to murder 007 as cruelly as possible - something he comes perilously close to doing. Red Grant arrives on the scene looking like he's been created in a Deluxe Henchman facility, perfecting the traditional staple in only the franchise's second film.
A perfect match for Bond in both wits and skill, Grant frequently displays the ruthless brutalism that earns the pair of them their living. The only difference is that 007's talents are utilised for Queen and Country, while Grant's are deployed at the evil SPECTRE'S behest.
His only flaw, if you can call it that, is his ignorance of the correct wine and meat combinations - raising Bond's eyebrow on the Orient Express by ordering a red chianti with fish. Granted, this isn't the cause of the classic brawl that follows - though it surely played a small part where the sophisticated 007 is concerned.
Striking and manoeuvring amidst the shuddering crashes of the carriage against the railway, the two use every move in their arsenals to defeat their polar opposite. They're so similar in their techniques that it's like watching a man duelling his mirror image. Music is noticeably missing from the encounter - as though even John Barry himself can do nothing but stop mid-score to watch this battle of the ages.
The iconic fight remains the greatest such sequence in the series, pitting James Bond against a character who remains the Best Henchmen Ever almost 60 years later.
