Ranking EVERY James Bond Henchman From Worst To Best
71. Professor Dr Metz (Diamonds Are Forever, 1971)
This easily irritated laser specialist is a key figure in Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s scheme to ransom world powers with a diamond laser satellite. Despite his prickly disposition, Metz actually has the world’s best interests at heart, ultimately seeking global disarmament.
You’d think that a man of such learned intelligence (notably holding the dual titles of Professor and Doctor) would be too smart to try and achieve this noble goal by partnering with the likes of Blofeld. However, Metz is seemingly the only person in the universe to be unaware of the SPECTRE head’s blatant villainy.
When he finally catches onto Blofeld’s nefarious nature, he is powerless to do anything but whine and complain, something he excels at throughout the film. Though Metz is not the first henchman to have a change of heart, he's wholly unwilling to do anything to remedy the evil ends he's unwittingly helped to achieve.
Instead, Metz meekly follows instructions after having his fleeting displays of defiance swatted away, and is presumably killed when Bond and the CIA attack Blofeld’s oil rig base. If he did survive, we know he won’t be rushing to partner with SPECTRE again. With his track record, it wouldn’t be a surprise to find him obliviously working on the Death Star.
