Ranking Every John Carpenter Theme Worst To Best
3. Halloween III: Season Of The Witch (1982) With Alan Howarth
Season of the Witch is a strange, silly and inventive movie which really did belong, er somewhere else. Set in a universe where the rest of the Halloween universe appeared to be mere films, all bets of sensibility were firmly off in outing number three. To put another way, it had nothing to do with anything.
That didn't stop John Carpenter from having enough faith in the sideways franchise dive to return for another musical contribution. Along with Alan Howarth, Carpenter created a piece which was brutally subtle, and there are really no catchy elements to this composition. It is still a strangely captivating piece of music, and its ambient electronic drone was about as effective as one could get for an 80s horror movie.
On paper, the premise of Halloween III was damn creepy, and this track encapsulates that creepiness in a far more effective manner than the movie came close to achieving. Carpenter's willingness to experiment with what can optimistically be described as an experimental film, is one of his best traits as a musician. The contrasting quality of movie and music in Halloween III proves this.
