Ranking Every John Carpenter Theme Worst To Best
14. Vampires (1998)
Same as before, but a little better this time. The Vampires theme has a droll bluesy swagger which works nicely for the style of the film.
Unfortunately, the film wasn't that great. If fact it's no exaggeration to say that a mind bending 80s keyboard theme would have been wasted on it. So instead, there was this. If you want the evocative feeling of driving across a tumbleweed-strewn desert alongside a foul mouthed James Woods on the hunt for Vampires, then this song is the one.
Again, of its own volition, it's a pretty cool tune. It represents Carpenter trying his hand at some Southern blues rock and of course he does it really well. John Carpenter understands music, he knows how to take an existing style and emulate it for his own cinematic purposes.
It could be argued however, that the dazzling synth scores of his most classic and revered movies are the genre definers. They're that damn good.
The Vampires theme is cool, but it ain't the John Carpenter we know and love.
