Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week

10. The Girl In The Spider's Web

Fede Álvarez's upcoming reboot of Steig Larsson's trilogy of novels was always going to have some big shoes to fill. David Fincher's adaption hit screens only seven years ago and was widely praised by both fans of the novels and critics, even racking up some Academy Award nominations. And even more specifically, Rooney Mara's performance as Lisbeth Salander was hailed as being pitch-perfect.

Sadly, this debut trailer doesn't do the film any favors in distancing itself from the previous incarnation of the franchise. If anything, the trailer's visuals look to be attempting to emulate Fincher's style at times. The use of back-lighting, claustrophobic settings, and sweeping snowy landscapes all feel very reminiscent of the 2011 film.

As does Foy's performance. The first minute-and-a-half of the trailer focuses solely on a single sequence, in which Foy' Lisbeth emerges in all her anti-heroic glory and it works really well. But Foy's appearance and performance feel more like imitations of Mara's work than they should.

This trailer needed to sell audiences on the idea that a rebooted version of this franchise was somehow better than simply making a sequel to the prior film with the same cast. And in that regard, it fails.
