Ranking Every Richard Linklater Film Worst To Best
5. Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
Where SubUrbia failed in the late 90s, Everybody Wants Some!! succeeds all the way through. Capturing the nostalgic bliss that he so aptly crafted in Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some!! is in many ways the film's spiritual successor, an emotional and hilarious slice-of-life dramedy that follows a group of college baseball players and their happy-go-lucky social lives.
Set over one weekend in 1980, the film features a string of memorable performances from the likes of Zoey Deutch and Blake Jenner, a killer soundtrack that captures the setting beautifully, and a perfect blend of eccentric characters and thoughtful dialogue as only Linklater could craft.
It has drinking, frat-boy parties and a sense of youthful rebellion, but isn't cliched or desperate to relive the films that characterised Linklater's earlier career. It's its own perfect organism, crafted by a director who has lived life, grown-up, but still knows what it was like to be a carefree teenager. It's bliss.
