Ranking Every Single Middle-Earth Movie From Worst To Best

8. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

Fellowship of the Ring
Warner Brothers/MGM/New Line

It may come as quite a surprise to see a Jackson led Middle-Earth film so far down the list, but sadly that is the reality that comes from Battle of the Five Armies. Although spectacle has always been a big part of the series, it's the emotional core that carries the titles to excellence, and in this film that takes a backseat to overwhelming excess.

It certainly is a large-scaled feature, with a tonne of great visuals, but the story ends up being far too overcomplicated and even the simplest moments come across as overblown. The giant scene of a battle is designed to take up the entirety of this feature, and if the previous entry struggled to contain the narrative of its large source into one film, then this one fails to do the opposite., and crams way too much into what should be a simple story.

The narrative here is no longer relatable, as Bilbo's journey is now a complete action-adventure. The tale works because Bilbo is thrown into a world he doesn't understand, but by this point, he's actively taking part in an enormous conflict, and it simply feels out of place.

Additionally, Legolas' inclusion is entirely forced, and his classic display of elven skill in this film looked more like a video game sequence akin to Mario jumping on Goombas.
