Ranking Every Single Middle-Earth Movie From Worst To Best

5. The Hobbit (1977)

Fellowship of the Ring
Rankin/Bass

The 1977 animated musical adaptation of Tolkien's classic children's tale is a thoroughly enjoyable title that remains mostly faithful to the source material, while still taking a few liberties.

One of the biggest highlights of this film is the musical numbers. While the concept of turning The Hobbit musical sounds absurd, it works quite well as songs and music are a big part of the Middle-Earth lore and bring a sense of charm to the world.

It faces a similar issue to the books in that the dwarves are incredibly lacking in personality. The only distinct roles are that of Thorin as the leader and Bomber as the overweight Dwarf. Otherwise, the only way to differentiate them is by the colour variations of their clothes.

Overall, it's a perfectly innocent adaptation that does an outstanding job of bringing the adventure and wonder of Middle-Earth to life. The animation style can appear quite rough and unappealing at times, but the majority of the it is a lovely and colourful delve into the fantasy genre.

For all of its faults, it's still a faithful and charming title.
