1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film still stands out as the best film in the series. It combines elements from the cartoon show of the time and the comics to make it its own unique entity that's appropriate for all ages.
This movie doesn't get nearly enough credit for being one of the earliest comic book movies to adapt an arc from the comics. The majority of this film is adapted from the original Mirage comic books. This kind of comic book movie storytelling wouldn't become common for over a decade.
The live action suits are at their peak here. The physicality the actors are able to achieve along with the animatronics are truly impressive. Jim Henson's Creature Shop had perfected animatronics at this point, and it really shows here.
This movie is certainly the most uncompromising. It doesn't feel watered down or like it was trying to set up sequels, or even sell toys. At the time of release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was able to boast being the highest grossing independent movie of all time.
While not a cinematic masterpiece, the original movie captures a certain point of time when this phenomenon was at its peak. It's still completely watchable and is the only Ninja Turtles movie that really stands out as required viewing.
