Ranking: Every Tim Burton Movie From Worst To Best

17. Planet Of The Apes (2001)

Alice In Wonderland Johnny Depp Frankenweenie
20th Century Fox

A project so fascinatingly bad it can't outright be dismissed, this misguided remake of the Charlton Heston-starring sci-fi classic may benefit from astounding makeup effects and solid performances from Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter, but it's largely sunk by a terrible lead turn from Mark Wahlberg, a cheesy script and a complete lack of creative stamp from Burton himself.

That's the saddest thing about this film: it plays out like any hack-for-hire could've made it, and so one has to ask why Fox even offered it to Burton in the first place rather than just hire a younger, less expensive talent.

We haven't even got to talking about the ending yet, a howlingly dumb "gotcha!" that, by Burton's own admission, was thrown in solely to tease a sequel even though it seemed to make practically no sense at all.

Best Moment: The ridiculous ending (where Wahlberg travels back in time to find Earth run by apes), if only because it's pretty much the only memorable scene in the entire movie, and for better and worse, it's kept people talking about the film ever since.
