RottenTomatoes Score: 75% (6.3/10 average) Box Office: Made on a whopping $75 million budget (far exceeding 2004's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, budgeted at just $30 million), Sponge Out of Water nevertheless proved to be a great investment for Paramount, grossing a huge $203.9 million to date, far exceeding the original's $140.2 million cume, and it's safe to say that SpongeBob's steam certainly hasn't run out yet. A significant improvement in quality over the last few seasons of the show if not quite as manically brilliant as the first movie, Sponge Out Of Water features more of the outrageous, surreal humour that made the show popular in the first place. Yes, the live-action segment of the movie is in fact much shorter than the trailer suggests (it only lasts about 20 minutes at the end), but this actually works in its favour, because the animated portions are much funnier, even if Antonio Banderas completely gives it his all as the hilarious villain, Burger-Beard the Pirate. If you're a long-time fan of the show, there's a good chance you loved this one.
