Ranking February 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

13. The Cloverfield Paradox

The Cloverfield Paradox
Netflix

RottenTomatoes Score: 17% (4.5/10)

Box Office: Straight to Netflix, though it's been whispered that the streaming platform paid more than $50 million to Paramount for the $45 million sci-fi thriller.

Paramount got a potential box office dud off their hands and Netflix enjoyed a huge publicity push out of its Super Bowl release, so everyone wins.

Verdict: Without question the worst of the three Cloverfield movies to date, there's little point denying that The Cloverfield Paradox is a mess. It at least benefits from some sharp visuals, Gubu Mbatha-Raw's compelling lead performance and a few gnarly flashes of outrageous body horror, but this could've been so, so much more.

The final product makes it clear just how mangled the movie was in post-production, with a rancid Earth-set subplot bringing little to the table, while the Cloverfield elements feel blatantly tacked-on, with franchise fans likely to be underwhelmed by how little monster mayhem actually takes place.

It's an interesting film, for sure, but hard to call a success in any palpable way.
