Ranking January 2016's Movies From Worst To Best

24. Dirty Grandpa

RottenTomatoes Score: 7% (2.6/10) Box Office: Even with a snowstorm ravaging large parts of the U.S., Dirty Grandpa still landed amid box office expectations in its first week on release, and after two weekends on release has made back its estimated $20 million budget. Not a major hit like Lionsgate were hoping for, but certainly decent enough in the long run. Verdict: The writing was on the wall here for a long time, and though Zac Efron and Robert De Niro can't be faulted for their peculiar commitment here, the script is a low-effort, bare bones raunch-fest that frequently forgets to be funny. You've seen a similar story dozens of times before, and like most of them, Dirty Grandpa becomes truly unstuck when it reaches for treacly sentiment, which flatly doesn't work. Like, at all. The occasional chuckle notwithstanding, it's tough to see why anyone got involved beyond a paycheck: it's pure January cinematic graveyard fodder through and through, and you probably won't remember it in a week.
