Ranking January 2019's Movies From Worst To Best

5. Colette

Colette Keira Knightley
Lionsgate

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87% (7.2/10)

Box Office: Budgetary data isn't yet available, but the Keira Knightley-starring period biopic has cracked $11.1 million worldwide so far. VOD sales will probably multiply this figure many times over, though.

Verdict: Stripping away the stuffiness commonly associated with period dramas and leaning into the dishy truth of the titular French author's life story, Colette is a genre entry both affecting and ludicrously entertaining.

Keira Knightley gives one of the most impressionable performances of her career in the lead role, while Dominic West is deliciously sleazy as her unfaithful git of a husband.

Spritely cinematograpghy and a cracking musical score seal the deal: this is a rousingly feminist film that boasts an enormously relevant story and message.
