Ranking July 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

Ghostbusters > Jason Bourne. Who knew?

Ghostbusters Jason Bourne Ice Age
Sony, Universal & Fox

July has been a huge month in film, ranging from the much-discussed release of the year's most controversial film, to a few long-awaited, long-gestating sequels to beloved movies, and of course, the usual scattering of indie darlings too.

Thankfully it's been a month largely devoid of outright cinematic travesties, though at the same time it's also been hugely lacking truly great movies, meaning we've mostly had to settle for good-to-decent fare this month. Sure, the height of the summer could be doing far worse, but some real home runs at this point wouldn't go amiss either.

And what will August bring? Suicide Squad, Pete's Dragon, Sausage Party, Ben-Hur, Kubo and the Two Strings, War Dogs, Mechanic: Resurrection and many, many more (including that Kevin Spacey talking cat film nobody wants to acknowledge).

Here are July 2016's movies ranked from worst to best...

20. Cell

Ghostbusters Jason Bourne Ice Age
Saban Films

RottenTomatoes Score: 0% (3.4/10 average score)

Box Office: Despite starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, Cell went straight to VOD in most major territories, and has pulled in barely $700,000 from its international theatrical release (most of it coming from Italy).

Verdict: This is a techno-thriller that might've felt current and hip about 15 years ago, but in 2016? Not so much, hence why it largely forewent cinemas and is destined to be quickly forgotten.

The terrible visual effects and dull direction suck so much energy out of things that the performers are powerless to do much to elevate it. The result is a bizarre effort where it's hard to understand how name actors were convinced to sign on, other than for a fat payday, of course.
