Ranking Seth MacFarlane's Properties From Worst To Best
4. The Cleveland Show
Looking back, you have to wonder whether MacFarlane ever really had faith in his own eventually failed spin-off. He lambasted the decision to choose Cleveland in his final Family Guy episode, as well as sticking two fingers up at the wide expectation that it should have been Quagmire.
But a Quagmire show would never have worked either. He's too much of a one dimensional character, whose comedic impact works 90% of the time when he's living up to his grotesque stereotype, and 10% when it is revealed that he actually does things other than sex. Cleveland at least had a family life and wasn't quite as tied to a single note.
And the show did genuinely have its moments when it played like a Family Guy #2: it's just that it made the somewhat cardinal sin of not quite fleshing the rest of the new universe out as well as something like Frasier did. But at least the Browns were added to the Family Guy cast as a result of the cancellation when it inevitably came.
