Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2017's Summer Blockbusters

1. Caesar - War For The Planet Of The Apes

As fantastic as Wonder Woman was, she still didn't quite stoke the same level of awe as ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis), whose journey throughout the unexpectedly brilliant new Apes trilogy came to a devastating end in the latest installment.

Serkis' performance is once again absolutely astonishing and totally worthy of awards consideration it naturally won't receive, while the jaw-dropping effects work from Weta Digital also shouldn't be discounted.

In concert, these tremendously talented forces created by far the most compassionate and mesmerising character of the summer, and probably even the year.

That War decisively completes Caesar's tenure in this franchise with an emotionally devastating farewell, after fighting so hard to avenge his murdered family, only further cements the Shakespearean overtones of his life and especially his death.

After gradually building audience investment over the last two movies, War was a tremendously affecting pay-off to one of the most complex and brilliantly-rendered (in every sense) protagonists in blockbuster history.
