Ranking The Coen Brothers Movies From Worst To Best

9. Blood Simple

No Country For Old Men
MGM

The Coen Brothers first venture into the world of feature length film-making, Blood Simple is a masterful debut effort if a little rough around the edges. The film follows a scorned husband who hires a private investigator to kill his cheating wife and lover with dire consequences.

The film is certainly a raw effort in comparison to the immaculately polished works they would produce after, and the Coen’s signature humour is conspicuous for its absence, but overall it is a well-written and clever effort that hits all the right notes as an intriguing thriller. The film also marked the beginning of one of the finest pairings in film history as Frances McDormand worked with the Coens for the first time on the big screen.

Blood Simple displays all the potential that the Coens would soon unlock in their career, from the masterful writing to the unique visuals and an ability to get the most out of their actors. It is far from their most polished piece but a nonetheless brilliant one, worthy to carry their name and one of the finest debut films from any film-maker.
