Ranking The Coen Brothers Movies From Worst To Best
1. Fargo
Fargo. Fargo is the Coen's at their very best. The film follows a pregnant Minnesota police chief (one of cinemas finest performances from the exemplary Frances McDormand) who finds herself entangled in a ransom plot gone wrong as she investigates a series of murders by the freezing Minnesota roadside.
The film is quite simply chocked full of some of the best performances put to screen- William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare and every minor character in between. The film twists and turns with practised precision and never allows the audience to sit still or get comfortable with what's happening. One of the Coen's signatures has become the hair-brained scheme going as wrong as it possibly can, and Fargo is the supreme exemplary of how well it can work in the hands of masters.
The writing is, of course, exceptional throughout. The colloquial dialogue is captured so expertly across the board and adds so much character to this incredible film. So loved is this brilliant effort that it has even spawned a spin-off TV series (which is equally one of the best TV shows running right now). Thrilling, funny, clever and all manner of other superlatives that I can think of in equal measure- Fargo is the stand-out film in the careers of two of the greatest film-makers of all time.
