Ranking The Films Of Alejandro G. Iñárritu From Worst To Best
5. Biutiful
Iñárritu's most bleak film to date. Javier Bardem stars as a single father of two young children who has to balance his illegal business affairs and his estranged and unstable wife when he is told he only has a few months left to live. The film is less about a family dealing with cancer and more about a man whose life is falling apart around him as he struggles to make sure his children will be alright once he's gone.
Bardem is extraordinary here and his selflessness brings a sense of poignancy to the role. The sympathies you feel for Bardem's character are only enhanced as more things go wrong in his life. He is by far the highlight here and he raises the film up as a result.
Biutiful can feel a little too depressing at times with not really any sense of optimism or levity present. This can certainly make the film a difficult watch and not a particularly enjoyable one. It's captivating in its execution, and not all cinema has to be a rollicking adventure but you should certainly be in the right frame of mind before sitting down to watch this dour drama.
