Ranking The Films Of Bong Joon-ho From Worst To Best
3. The Host
Bong's Korean monster movie is as iconic as it is engaging. A dysfunctional family must band together to save one of their own after a mutated sea creature kidnaps a young child. Song Kang-ho plays Gang-Doo, the father of the missing girl, and a bit a loser. He and the rest of his family must overcome their flaws and interpersonal issues in an attempt to save their loved one.
A political allegory wrapped in a giant fish creature attack works better than it has any right to, and The Host delves into smart social commentary and criticism of government and big business.
At its core it is a human story about the family and Bong's character focused narrative never loses sight of what is important here.
The large CGI monster itself hasn't aged the best over the years but that is hardly the fault of the film. Bong breaks every convention he can, showing the unique monster in full view almost straight away, leaving nothing to the imagination. It is smartly designed and instantly memorable.
The Host provides both thrills and intelligent observations on society and government, and is undoubtedly Bong Joon-ho's most fun film.
