Ranking The Films Of Paul Thomas Anderson From Worst To Best

2. Phantom Thread

Phillip Seymor Hoffman The Master
Universal

PTA's most recent film is one of his very best. Phantom Thread is a slow-burn drama about the increasingly volatile and passive relationship between Daniel Day-Lewis' dressmaker and his stubborn and determined muse played by Vicky Krieps.

Reynolds Woodcock is a womaniser and a genius in his field but he gets bored of women quickly and the only consistent relationship in his life is his judgemental and controlling sister Cyril (a scene-stealing Lesley Manville).

So, when Alma comes into his life, everything unravels as the three principal characters struggle for power within each other's lives. The film is methodical and meticulous in nature, making the few raised voices really memorable in the film.

Phantom Thread is peppered with whipping insults and jabs and is exceptionally written throughout. Day-Lewis is on the top of his game and Krieps holds her own against the icon. You'll be enjoying the warped family dynamics just as PTA lures you into a false sense of security, then the film turns more sinister and unhinged in all the best ways.
