Thankfully this year there was Spy, though, which gave this actress her best role to date - and just in the nick of time, it seems, given that it felt like she was about to become something akin to box office poison. Melissa McCarthy isn't a bad actress, and she is capable of more sides than people give her credit for. Compared to Adam Sandler (who we ranked in last place on the male version of this list), she's goddamn Meryl Streep. Problem is, there's something slightly insufferable about her when she's cast in the wrong role, and her schtick can often feel a bit samey. Still, you have to commend her: she's the third highest-paid actress in the world, ahead of more conventional beauties such as Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Fair play, Mel.
