17. 2005: The Descent
Not only is The Descent distressingly claustrophobic, trapping its characters in an inescapable cave system with no light, but it then pits them against vile monsters who stalk them at every turn.
Alongside this gloomy game of cat-and-mouse, director Neil Marshal manages to infuse a complex tale of deceit and betrayal, and piles the action with enough blood and gore to leave you feeling unclean just watching it.
Energetic, violent, bleak, and dripping with dread, The Descent is not a trip you'll want to take alone, and should definitely steer clear of if you hate tight spaces.
