Other Steven Spielberg References

Jurassic Park Steven Spielberg
Universal Pictures

Though he claimed there wouldn't be any, there are a couple of Spielberg references in there.

Apparently, he nixed some other references to his own work, which is a shame. Hopefully, we'll learn of more, but that definitely won't include ET, as Spielberg explained its absence in an interview with USA TODAY:

"He’s not available. He’s kind of retired," Spielberg responds. "Or it. Don’t forget, E.T. is not a He or She. It’s a plant-based entity. "

As part of the hectic opening race that forms the basis of the first of Halliday's tasks, Spielberg included his most charismatic dinosaur - the T-Rex from Jurassic Park - and briefly remade the jeep chase sequence from the first movie as it chases Aech's monster truck.

126. War Of The Worlds

A crashed Martian ship from War Of The Worlds is the site of a virtual meeting between Nolan Sorrento's avatar and I-R0k where they exchange The Orb of Osuvox.

125. Gremlins

Spielberg was a producer on Gremlins and he has confirmed that someone in the art department on Ready Player One snuck some Gremlins graffiti into the background of the film. Presumably, he'd have got rid if he'd seen it earlier.

On top of that, when i-R0k gives Sorrento the Orb, the box it's in is the same one used to house Gizmo in Gremlins,

124. Raiders Of The Lost Ark

A poster for Spielberg's seminal adventure classic is seen in Halliday’s childhood bedroom at the end of the movie.
