The two Planet Doom sequences - the player event that offers the chance for players to win a powerful artifact and the end battle - are packed with early references - mostly in the shape of player Avatars. In amongst them is the familiar figure of DC comics' villain Deadshot, last seen on a movie screen played by Will Smith in Suicide Squad.

Batman and his pals don't have the monopoly on the comics references either...

114. Marvel

At one point, Wade Watts mentions that his father named him so that his name sounded like a superhero's name, like Peter Parker or Bruce Banner.

113. Superman

Nolan's muscular Avatar is designed to look like Alex Ross' Superman, right down to the signature forehead curl.

112. Clark Kent

When Art3mis insists that the now-famous Z cannot simply walk around the OASIS without expecting to be mobbed, she gives him a pair of Clark Kent glasses, which make him unrecognisable without actually changing his appearance. His hair even goes all Kent-ish.

111. Lex Luthor's Quote

At one point, when Art3mis and Parzival are showing off their Halliday trivia, Z quotes Superman: The Movie (1978), as one of the creator's favourite quotes.

The line belongs to Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor: “Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it’s a simple adventure story; others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.”

110. Raven

Some graffiti in The Stacks is dedicated to DC's Teen Titans character Raven.

109. Injustice's DC Heroes

Injustice's version of Supergirl appears as an Avatar at one point, and the game's versions of Aquaman, The Flash and Batgirl appear in the final battle.
