Ready Player One: Every Pop Culture Reference In The Trailer

3. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

Ready Player One Freddy Krueger

Okay so there are no visual references to the iconic Roald Dahl story in the trailer, but the soundtrack's nod to it is both significant and fitting.

When Wade Watts first dons his VR headset, notes from Gene Wilder’s Pure Imagination of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory fame ring out, and this isn't just because the protagonist is about to descent into one.

OASIS late creator James Halliday is very much modelled on Wonka, dealing in digital thrills rather than chocolate-coated ones, and the easter egg hunt the story is based around evokes memories of Dahl's golden tickets.

Later in the trailer, Tom Sawyer by Rush kicks in, and not just because it's a cool song.

The Canadian group just so happen to be Halliday's favourite in the novels, and he created OASIS while they were playing in the background.
