It's time to enter the OASIS.

Ready Player One is now in cinemas, and despite a lot of pre-release negativity and belief that it would amount to little more than a nostalgia-fuelled CGI-fest, it's actually a thoroughly enjoyable (if too long) movie.

The adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel is a return to blockbuster filmmaking for the master of the form, Steven Spielberg, and represents his best work in the genre since 2002's Minority Report. Set in a crumbling version of Ohio in 2045, it's a world where almost all civilians instead escape to a place called the OASIS, a virtual reality where you can do almost anything and be anyone.

Part of the sell of the book and thus is the film is that it's steeped in 1980s culture and packed with Easter eggs and references to that time, but the movie also ensures to put the story ahead of the iconography, with Spielberg crafting something filled with all the heart and wonder you'd expect from him. It helps that he has another talented cast at his disposal, and a roster of characters ready to play the game, although some fare much better than others both in and out of the OASIS.
