This one was perhaps the biggest concern heading into the movie: yes, it’d have a lot of references and Easter eggs, but would they simply BE the movie? What else would it have to offer?

Thankfully, it’s got a fair bit.

Again, a lot of this goes back to Spielberg, who has long since proved his ability to elevate source material and put his own spin on things, which we get here. The plot is engaging, the central relationship worth investing in, and the scenes in the OASIS zip along at a great pace..

A lot of the references actually end up being important to the characters and/or the plot of the film anyway, but above and beyond that he imbues the film with so much of his typical charm, heart, humour, and wonder that it’s almost impossible not to get swept up in it all, certainly while watching on the big screen.
