3. A Few Of The Characters Are Underdeveloped

Ready Player One F'Nale
Warner Bros.

While what can be considered the central trio - Parzival, Art3mis, Nolan Sorrento - get strong character arcs, the same can't quite be said for a number of the supporting players who, despite solid, likeable performances, come out quite thin.

The worst offender is F'Nale, played by Hannah John-Kamen, who works with Sorrento at IOI. There's not really a lot to go on for her character, despite the fact she serves as the secondary antagonist, and it leads to one of the film's most stilted performances too.

Even the more entertaining supporting players are very shallow though, there largely to aid our heroes and marvel at the world we're living in. For the most part it's not a major issue, but when it comes to the point where the film asks us to invest in them more as an ensemble and they're required to do more, that lack of depth does become quite apparent.
