Ready Player One Trailer Explained: 10 Things We Learned

3. Looks Like The Iron Giant Takes Over From Ultraman

Another mild spoiler coming up now... as may be readily apparent from the trailer's many shots of large scale hand-to-hand combat encompassing innumerable pop culture icons, Ready Player One features a climactic battle in which the users of the OASIS team up alongside Parzival, Art3mis and co. in a bid to stop IOI from getting the Easter Egg.

In the novel, this final confrontation sees Parzival utilise a power-up that temporarily transforms him into Ultraman, the iconic monster-fighting giant of Japanese TV. However, it would appear that in the movie, these duties have instead been handed to The Iron Giant, the beloved oversized robot of Brad Bird's 1999 animated classic.

So, was this change-up due to an inability to secure the rights to Ultraman (understandable, given the sheer number of properties they had to licence), or did they want to utilise a character closer to the heart of western audiences? Right now, we don't know.

Either way, Vin Diesel - who had one of his earliest high-profile roles in Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan - will be back to voice the Iron Giant once again. (Be honest now, how many of us get choked at the mere thought of him saying, 'Superman'?)

However, we might also note that in the novel, Parzival's Ultraman does battle with an IOI-controlled Mechagodzilla - and given that Warner Bros own the US film rights to the Godzilla characters (plus the briefly-glimpsed Kong), might that adversary still be on the cards?
