Recasting The Lord Of The Rings Movies
6. Legolas - Ben Barnes
Barnes is familiar to the fantasy world, having played Prince Caspian in the Narnia film of the same name. The thirty-nine-year-old has an impossibly young look that would be expertly suited to the character. Being able to portray a sense of life whilst still maintaining the features of youth is something that Barnes' look would accomplish expertly. Additionally, he also emits an elven quality in his facial features that complies with the character.
Barnes has turned in some fantastic performances that combine high-class characters with a sense of danger and darkness. A great example would be his appearance as Dorian Gray, in which he toed the line perfectly between a likeable protagonist and a twisted, corrupt man. Through the employment of this skill, he could give Legolas a lot of surface and a side that is a little more nuanced.
Legolas achieved a lot in the original trilogy, but often felt lacklustre in his development. He existed as a reasonable force without too much agency in the plot. He mostly acted as a display of when elves are capable of. Barnes would be able to ignore this limitation and create a compelling version of the character.
